Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, at Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise when she was a child. Aunt Denise was a nurse working night shifts to ensure that she could devote the day to literature, art as well as theater, among other things. She introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay was taught by her mother that the art form could be utilized to promote activism. Her mother, too, was well-educated and encouraged how to express herself through the arts. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and was raised. DuVernay's father remembered watching the Civil Rights movement's historic march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma was the inspiration she used to create a documentary about The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she earned degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. Her first job was working as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the responsibility of looking over the house and examining the trash of one of members of the juries. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalism tasks and decided to switch over to the public relations industry. DuVernay began her career as a junior public relations assistant at a small film studio, right after graduating from the college. In this role, she launched her own firm of public relations called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition to PR her agency also established a range of social media and lifestyle networks, including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
